A site manager on a half-built high-rise pulls a device from a tool belt to check a plan, gloves still on, sun straight on the screen — and drops it 1.5 meters onto concrete when a beam shifts. By week's end the consumer phone's glass is cracked, the screen washes out at noon, and the battery is dead before the shift ends. 1. Dust and debris are constant. Concrete dust, sand and fine grit infiltrate seams and charge ports daily, abrading connectors and fouling speakers and mics.
2. Drops and impact are routine. From belts, scaffolds and vehicle cabs, falls of one to three meters onto hard surfaces are normal, not exceptional. Vibration from plant and vehicles adds fatigue.
3. Sunlight readability. Outdoor work means screens must stay legible under direct sun — most consumer displays wash out exactly when the plan is needed most.
4. Gloved hands and outdoor positioning. Workers operate in gloves (often wet or dirty), and site coordination depends on accurate GPS/GNSS and push-to-talk across a noisy, spread-out site.
Drop rating plus sealed construction. MIL-STD-810H drop testing and an IP68 seal decide survival on concrete and against grit — not a "tough case" clip-on.
Sunlight-readable display. Ask for high brightness (often 600–1000+ nits) and anti-glare treatment; a dim screen is a safety and productivity gap outdoors.
Glove and wet-touch mode. Capacitive screens must register gloved or wet fingers; this is a workflow requirement, not a gimmick.
Accurate outdoor positioning. Multi-band GNSS (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BeiDou) matters for asset and personnel location across a large site.
Battery for the shift, with vehicle charging. Long outdoor days need large cells or hot-swap, plus charging in site vehicles and cabins.
Push-to-talk for site voice. PoC over cellular (or DMR where licensed) keeps a noisy, spread-out crew coordinated without consumer-call fragility.
