The Communication Gap Beyond Coastal Waters

Traditional VHF radios have served fishing fleets for decades, but they come with a hard limit: range. Once a vessel moves beyond 20–30 nautical miles from the nearest coast station or mothership, direct VHF communication becomes unreliable or impossible.

For fishing operators running multi-vessel fleets across Southeast Asian waters, the Middle East, and Latin American coastlines, this creates a genuine operational risk. Crews can't call for assistance. Dispatch can't reroute a boat to a new fishing ground. Emergency coordination depends on satellite phones that few deckhands carry.

Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) radio changes the equation by using 4G/5G networks instead of VHF channels. The coverage area is no longer measured in miles from a base station—it's wherever there's a cellular signal. In many fishing regions, that now extends 20–50 miles offshore, and in some cases further where marine network coverage exists.

How PoC Radio Works on a Fishing Vessel

A PoC radio is essentially a purpose-built device that connects to cellular networks and provides instant push-to-talk communication. No dialing, no waiting for a connection—just press a button and speak, like a traditional walkie-talkie.

The key advantage for fishing fleets is group communication. A fleet operator can create channels for different purposes: a command channel for the captain and shore dispatch, a safety channel for emergency broadcasts, and working channels for day-to-day coordination between vessels.

Most rugged PoC devices used in marine environments carry IP67 or IP68 ratings, meaning they survive spray, rain, and the occasional deck wash. Battery life typically runs 12–20 hours of active use, which covers a full shift without needing a charge. Some units support dual-SIM or multi-network roaming, automatically switching to the strongest available signal as the vessel moves along the coast.

Three Operational Scenarios Where PoC Radio Proves Useful

Fleet dispatch and coordination. When multiple vessels are working the same area, the shore dispatcher can broadcast weather updates, market price changes, or new fishing ground coordinates to all boats simultaneously. There's no need for individual satellite phone calls.

Emergency response. If a crew member is injured or a vessel takes on water, a single button press alerts every other boat in the fleet plus the shore base. GPS location is automatically attached to the distress call on supported systems, so rescue coordination starts with a known position.

Catch reporting and compliance. Many fishing operations now use PoC radios alongside mobile data terminals to report catch volumes in real time. This helps shore-side processing plants schedule labor and logistics before the boat even docks. Some systems integrate with fisheries compliance platforms, automatically logging vessel position and activity for regulatory reporting.

Network Coverage: The Practical Limit

PoC is not a replacement for satellite communication in deep-water, long-range fishing operations. When a vessel operates beyond 50–100 miles offshore—depending on local marine network infrastructure—cellular coverage drops off and PoC radios revert to offline mode.

The practical approach used by many operators is a hybrid setup: PoC radios for day-to-day fleet coordination within coastal waters, and satellite phones or VHF for emergency use in deep-water operations. This gives crews reliable, low-cost communication for most of their working time without the expense of equipping every deckhand with a satellite device.

Coverage is also expanding. Marine network projects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East are extending 4G coverage further offshore. Fishing operators who adopt PoC now are positioning themselves to benefit as network reach improves.
